Press Release – April 5th, 2012

On March 29th at the Durango Discovery Museum, The La Plata Economic Development Alliance unveiled a new branding initiative for Durango and La Plata County, Colorado.  The brand, “I’m from Durango”, will use the imagery and collaborative spirit of Southwest Colorado to promote local businesses and raise awareness of doing business here.  Read the Durango Herald story here.

Nationally, there is a growing trend to brand products and services coming out of a region.  In the statewide Economic Blueprint, Colorado identified branding products as one of its goals.  The “I’m from Durango” brand is one of the first in Colorado and helps to place La Plata County in the forefront of communities developing and implementing this initiative.

Geoff Wolf, who owns Wolf Direct Marketing and is the Chair of the Alliance’s Marketing Committee, notes that “communication today must be accomplished with less and say more than ever.   This brand leverages the International brand equity of Durango as well as the essence of its culture.  It is both simple and powerful.”

The brand reflects the colors of the Southwest, the collaborative spirit of the region, and the Four Corners.  The quote “I’m from Durango” symbolizes the region’s laid back and friendly spirit, while connecting the brand to a community known throughout the world.

Businesses will benefit by using the brand on packaging, websites, or both, and being recognized on the new website with their company name, a brief description of what they do, and a link back to their webpage to help boost their business traffic and sales.  This logo is available to every business including foods and beverage,   manufactured goods and professional services.

“To me, using this brand just makes sense,” said Laurie Sigillito, owner of FastSigns Durango.  “It’s a community effort to promote our businesses and the local economy.  The more we use this, the more successful we’ll be as a region and I’ll be as a business owner.”

“The goal is for people everywhere to be able to find goods and services made here in La Plata County,” said Roger Zalneraitis, the Executive Director of the Economic Development Alliance.  “At the same time, we also hope to raise recognition that you can be a successful business in beautiful southwest Colorado by proudly showing our successful companies to the world.”

The Alliance will shortly be rolling out sister campaigns for “I’m from Ignacio” and “I’m from Bayfield”.  This will provide each community in La Plata County with its own unique brand using the same banner, website, and business opportunities.
